1965 Deluxe Microbus - Twenty-One Windows and One Sunroof
The project continues...
After nearly 20 years, this is how it all looks riding on new rims and tires. Actually, it will have been 22 years when I put in the rebuilt steering box from Bus Boys - Walt thought it was funny that after 18 years I was just getting around to buying rebuilt king pins from them, but that's sometimes how life is. I am probably the only person who likes how high the bus is sitting. Back in the day I would jump the railroad tracks with all my friends in the back. (The tracks were never used at night.) Tire technology has come a long way. Right now I have KYB Gas-adjust shocks on the front. I'll wait to drive it around to decide whether to replace those with GR2s. Back to the story, so I bought this bus from my sister in the late 80s. She had bought it with my mom's help to haul paintings around in it. The clutch is difficult and steering is awkward and she had a difficult time navigating it around. I'm guessing my mom drove it home! I was hooked on first site. In any event, it had already gotten the rear-wheel cut-outs and fiberglass side scoop treatment. The original sunroof was gone in favor of a snap-on tarp. It had the original seats which I regrettably trashed in my juvenile dementia (upset that a pair of Afghans had completely trashed the seats). |
