1965 Deluxe Microbus - Twenty-One Windows and One Sunroof

In keeping with the zebra safari paint job the bus once had (and the fact that the bus has enough metal damage that prevent it from ever being a trailer queen) I decided to have some fun - but still retain a vintage look.

My inspiration is the '67 Safari Bus advertisement. There are two that I know of, one was featured in Life Magazine and the other in Time Magazine (June 23, 1967).

To me, the interesting thing about this
ad is that VWoA was touting a strength in an older design that would, within months, be replaced.

Safari busses were used in Kenya in the 60's by various tour companies to haul the "Born Free" generation around the savana. Chrome hubcaps and funny hats obviously had no effect on the pride.

The red signs on the side of the busses might have said, "Attention Lions. These busses are not zebras." Seriously though, it is probably the name of the touring company.

Note how the side windows open up - these types of windows are available from Creative Engineering! Also, note the lack of bumper over-riders, (over-riders are the bars that go above the bumpers, and were USA spec only). I think though, that I am going to sandblast my hubcaps and powder coat them white - which will offset nicely with the chrome wheels.

The Kombi to the left appears to have a sunroof (or maybe just a piece of canvas on the roof posing as a sunroof).

Brekina Automodelle created the VW Kombi Safari bus below. I like the roof rack and the tire on the front, although having it there is asking to have the nose punched in because it sits out further than the bumper.
