Now that nearly every joe has an email address, you can easily sign up to a mail list and find help nearby. National lists tend to have "gaps" though, so finding someone in less-populated areas may be difficult. By and large, people closer to larger urban areas are more "connected" than rural folks. The Vintage Volkswagen Club of America runs a large mail list - though there are other lists, such as the Type 2 list and the Houston Volkswagen Club list. Probably the biggest Usenet list is RAMVA (Rec.Auto.Makers.VW.Aircooled) group. You'll need a news reader to post messages, though you can read newsgroup posts using Google. Lastly, online forums, such as those run by Strictly Vintage 2's are helpful. Rescue Lists A great example of a rescue list is the Aircooled Interstate Rescue Squad @ www.type2.com/rescue. The A.I.R.S. list is an index of people who care about stranded Volkswagen bus enthusiasts. In the Volkswagen community, it really doesn't matter what type of VW you have, as usually the person on the other end will try to find help any way they can. Regional Clubs Although it may be more difficult to get ahold of someone quickly through a Volkswagen club, many club websites are fairly active. A good example is the Aircoolers collection of clubs. Started as the Austin Aircoolers - the Aircoolers has since sprouted clubs in Baton Rouge, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. Their site is located at www.aircoolers.org. Car Talk Mechan-X-Files Tom and Ray Magliozzi host a database of recommended mechanics at their Car Talk website at cars.com. More information at http://cartalk.cars.com/About/Garage/intro.html. Do you have a VW service? We'd like to put your business in our listing. let us know.
